There are lots of books out there that approach suffering from different angles.  Some warm our heart with personal stories, others put the theological framework in place to give us stability in hard times.

Tim Keller’s book seeks to do both.  It begins by engaging with an atheist worldview and exposes the problems of approaching suffering from that starting point. Then in the second half of the book he shows how Christian gospel is the only truth that can help us and how Christ is the only person who can draw near to us.  The book is interspersed with real stories of those suffering.

It’s a long read that you won’t get through in one sitting.  A slow-burner that’s worth chewing on (to mix my metaphors!)
